This is a very early tech demo of a custom vehicle physics project I've been working on since early 2024. In terms of handling and vehicle physics it aims to be fairly realistic, but the controls have been adapted to work well on keyboards and controllers. Eventually this tech might be the basis of a future racing game of some sort, but those are distant plans for now.

The control bindings can be seen on a green board in-game!

Sorry for the harmonica-like surface of the test track, that was my first attempt at using a road tool for making a track. I do have plans for a nicer track in the future though.

Features:

  • Custom-developed driving mechanics including the wheel collider, tire model, suspension and more
  • Keyboard and controller support (no steering wheel support yet)
  • A basic test map with two cars available to drive
  • Most handling parameters of both cars can be adjusted from a menu
  • Telemetry to display live physics information

Here is a rough outline of my future plans with this project, subject to change as I go:

  • Short term (-ish)
    • Finishing the development of the drivetrain and suspension, as some aspects of these are still simple placeholder solutions for now
    • Adding aerodynamics in preparation for faster cars with downforce
    • Adding steering wheel support, utilizing the force-feedback value that is already visible in the telemetry window
    • Adding some audio such as engine and tire sounds
  • Longer term
    • Creating a bigger and nicer  test track to drive on
    • Adding more cars to drive, faster race cars in particular
    • Adding more surface types like wet roads, dirt etc. (currently every surface counts as dry asphalt to the physics)
    • Creating custom car models in a more realistic style, as the current low-poly ones are just free placeholder assets
    • Eventually turning it into a full racing game, but my plans for that are pretty vague at the moment
